Music
Music is an important foundation subject at Mountfield Primary School. It is valued not only as a subject for its own sake, but also for the wider learning it represents. A range of research shows that music, among many other things, helps to develop children's understanding of phonics and language development, grows neural connections in the brain, encourages movement which develops both gross and fine motor skills, and improves memory. It helps build pupils' self-esteem and self-discipline and leads to higher standards across the curriculum.
It is used to celebrate and mark important times across the year with whole school performances at Harvest, Christmas, Easter and our annual Community Singing Picnic, amongst other opportunities.
Music is taught across the school and pupils’ knowledge and skills are carefully scaffolded to ensure progression throughout the whole curriculum. This is achieved through a carefully designed curriculum whereby singing is prioritised in the EYFS and KS1, with musical knowledge and skills being developed throughout years 3 and 4, while in years 5 and 6 pupils have an opportunity to develop and apply their musicianship skills through learning the Ukulele and trumpet. Running through all year groups is a programme of listening to ensure that pupils are exposed to a wide repertoire of music from many different musical traditions.
